Take Me Out to the Ballgame...

MGSA is hosting a Spring Softball picnic! It's at Andrews Park, Sunday, April 10th at 1 pm. The department will furnish the meat (plus some veggie options) as well as drinks. All you have to do is bring salads, fruit, desserts, or other culinary delights - potluck style! Sign up at Cristin's desk for what you plan to bring. Want more information? Check your mailbox for a "formal" invitation or contact any MGSA officer (Nancy, Houssein, Sean B., or Salam).

Get Involved!

Want to get involved? MGSA has two great opportunities coming up!

1. Bowling Night! Want to relieve stress, show off your competitive side, or just enjoy the sports-related antics of your fellow graduate students? You're in luck! We'll be bowling at the Sooner Bowling Center (550 24th Avenue NW) on March 4. Sign up at Cristin's desk by March 2 if you're interested, or contact Houssein if you have questions.

2. Big Event! Literally! Want to give back to the community? This year, MGSA is sending a group to OU's official community service day (Saturday, April 2). More info can be found at bigevent.ou.edu. Sign up at Cristin's desk by March 3 if you're interested, or contact Nancy if you have questions.

No excuses for being bored in the upcoming weeks!

Looking for Something to Do?

Are you ready to get out and participate in a group activity after all the snow and ice madness? Well, your new MGSA officers want to help you with just that! They are seeking responses to a very short online survey regarding what social events you would like to see this semester (or in future semesters). You can access the survey here:

The survey will be open through the month of February, so you have
plenty of time to make your voice heard. Please let us know how we can make your graduate school experience even more enjoyable! Thanks!

End-of-Semester Events

With the middle of the semester often comes a retreat from social activities in order to focus on exams, homework, grading, and the like. But, with the end of the semester comes celebration of things accomplished, anticipation of free time with friends and family, and... well... food! Check out these two end-of-semester events occurring this week:

1. The Math Department Holiday Dinner. Great food, great colleagues, a festive atmosphere - what more could you want? This year's Holiday Dinner is Wednesday (December 8) from 11 AM - 3 PM in the Conference Room. You can sign up at Cristin's desk with what type of food you are planning to bring. It's always fun to see what others bring (and get new ideas for your own holiday treats!) and to simply take a break from finals preparation to relax with the entire department.

2. Women in Math Brown-Bag Lunch. This event is NOT limited to females. All who support women in mathematics at OU are welcome! The brown-bag lunch is Thursday (December 9) from 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM in the Conference Room. No need to sign up; just bring your own lunch and enjoy the camaraderie.

Happy Holidays to all from MGSA!

Congratulations to all who participated on both teams (listed below), and a special congratulations to the members of Team A, who won the tournament! Make sure to congratulate these folks if you see them around the building -- and ask to see their impressive volleyball skills! :)

Team A: Dr. Kornelson, Salam, Yoe, Tetsuya, Kumar, Daniel, Keshav

Team B: Cherith, Hong, Nancy, Houssein, Matt, Sean, Thomas

Volleyball Team!

MGSA is putting together at least one volleyball team for the volleyball tournament on Tuesday, September 14 from 6 to 10 PM at the Huston Huffman Center. The best part? You don't have to be good at volleyball (or even sports in general) to be a part of the team! You just have to be willing to come out on the 14th and have fun with some of your colleagues from MGSA. It's even free to participate!

Keshav has volunteered to be team captain and to organize the paperwork needed to get us signed up. So, to take part, all you need to do is contact Keshav (kacharya@math.ou.edu), and he will take care of the rest. Simple, right?

So what are you waiting for? Let's show some Math Department spirit!

Tuesday Tea TODAY at 3:30pm

It's the start of a new semester, and therefore, the start of a new set of Tuesday Teas. For those of you who don't know, Tuesday Tea is a weekly tradition in which a bunch of us math grads get together, drink tea, eat cookies, and normally play some games. If you have any tea questions, you can ask Shayna.

Today's Tea will be featuring ice cream left over from the ice cream social. Also, there will be an MGSA meeting during the tea, so we definitely encourage everyone to come.

Join us for Tuesday Tea at 3:30pm in the conference room on the 4th floor every Tuesday (starting TODAY)!

Ice Cream Social - Friday!

The ever-industrious Nancy Ho has been working hard to organize an ice cream social to kick off the new school year. You should have seen emails about this over the past couple of weeks. The latest details are as follows:

What: Ice Cream Social
When: Friday, August 20 at 4:00 PM
Where: Mathematics Department Help Center (PHSC 425A)

We need volunteers to sign up to bring ice cream, toppings, ICE, etc. Nancy has created an online sign-up sheet available here. So, if you're coming and planning to bring something, let us know what you're planning to bring. It looks like a good crowd has already started to form, but we all know that more ice cream is always better! :) So, sign up, and join in the fun on Friday afternoon to help us welcome the new grad students (and say hello to each other again after a long, hot summer).
